Dos and Don'ts For Father's Day Gift Ideas

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Father's Day is just around the corner.

If you haven't settled on a gift for your dad just yet, CBS 2's Alice Gainer talked to some experts and has some tips on what to get and what to avoid this year.

Father's Day is a day to celebrate dear old dad. So when it comes to thanking him, some dads say don't blow it with those run-of-the-mill gifts.

"Another shirt," one father griped.

"Another pair of socks. I would not want another pair of socks," another dad advised.

"A tie....no ties," said another dad.

What about a home-cooked breakfast in bed? It's not for everyone, Gainer learned.

"I don't want to be woken up at 7 o'clock in the morning and saying 'happy Father's Day.' That's what I don't want," said one man. "Maybe lunch at the Waldorf or something like that."

The dads added they don't need a lavish gift to make this a memorable Father's Day, just something thoughtful.

"I would love tickets to a Yankees game. That's what I would love," said a sports fanatic dad.

"I'll take anything. I'm easy to buy off," another man said. "And a bottle of scotch would be good, too."

"Just to be with my family that's the best gift," another dad said.

Some dads added planning an activity to do together is also a good idea.
