Parks Department To Crack Down On Barbecuing On Pelham Parkway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Officials have said they plan to crack down on barbecuing on Pelham Parkway, the greenway in the Bronx that links the New England Thruway and the Bronx River Parkway.

As 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported Tuesday, barbecuing is a regular event on Pelham Parkway, but it is illegal, and the Parks Department said it will enforce the rule.

Neighbors such as "Elizabeth" said they do not see what the big deal is.

"The barbecuing on the parkway doesn't create a problem. It's just that there's not enough garbage receptacles to put all the garbage in," she said. "People usually clean up, but when there's not enough garbage receptacles, the garbage starts to pile up around the garbage, and it's not picked up very often."

And "Ian" said the people who barbecue seem responsible enough about it.

"Little families, basically; not big families. They play soccer; they play sports," he said.

A Parks Department official said it is not just the trash, but the trees. The leaves can get singed from the smoke.
