'North West'? That's Not The Craziest Baby Name, Not By A Long Shot

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Just when you thought Kanye West and Kim Kardashian would give their baby a name that begins with a "K," they go north, way north.

The celebrity couple has decided to name their daughter "North West"

West was born at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on June 15 at 5:34 a.m. The birth certificate doesn't mention a middle name, nor includes hair, eye and weight information.

So, are fans loving the name North West or laughing at it?

CBS 2's Vanessa Murdock got reaction on Friday and explored the old saying "what's in a name?"

"I think people are gonna laugh at that. She might be made fun of," said Deborah Zucker of Montclair, N.J.

"It's not as bad as I thought it might be," added Darryle Bogan.

Logan and Rowan Lavail of Montclair also said they liked the name.

It's unusual, but perhaps not the most shocking baby name if you consider the following: Jermaine Jackson named his son "Jermajesty," Penn Jillette chose "Moxie CrimeFighter" for his daughter and Frank Zappa opted for "Moon Unit" and "Diva Thin Muffin."

Pamela Redmond Satran is the co-creator of nameberry.com and a self-proclaimed name nerd since the age of 11. The name "North" doesn't surprise her.

"Last year in November we did our major trend forecast for 2013 and 'North' was one of the names we predicted would be big," Satran said.

She did think it was out of the running, though.

"As far back as March, Kim on Jay Leno has said 'North' had been discussed but it was not really in the running," Satran said.

Apparently Kanye's pick prevailed.

"He loved the name and he won the argument," Satran said.

Now that the name North West has been revealed the next name people are waiting with baited breath to hear is the royal baby name. But will it be modern or traditional?

"Favorites are traditional names that I'm sure will be their choice," Satran said.

No matter the choice, expect both the royal baby name and North to rise in popularity.

"Why would you call them part of the compass?  That's what I'm wondering," one 12-year-old named "Mason" said.

"Some people may think it's odd, but it's a good name because you stand out," added a girl named "Victoria."

Celebrity choice can start a huge trend, although, these choices didn't: Jason Lee named his son "Pilot Inspektor."

More thought goes into baby names now than ever. People most often choose a name that makes a statement about who they are and what they care about, including their style, ethnic background, and values.
