Asian Tiger Mosquitoes Out For Blood During The Day

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - It's not your imagination - mosquitoes are out during the day now, too.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, broad daylight is not a safe haven from this season's Asian tiger mosquito.

"It's probably one of the only mosquitoes that is going to bite you during the day in your yard," chief inspector for Bergen County's Mosquito Control Pete Rendine told Smith. "You can't miss it. It's black and white, the legs are white striped and the body is white striped. That's why they call it the tiger."

"It's a very aggressive mosquito, too. It's going to really ruin your backyard party," said Rendine.

With all the recent rain, North Jersey is a perfect breeding ground. And the Asian tiger doesn't need much space, Rendine said.

"This mosquito can breed in a bottle cap," said Rendine.

But Rendine said there's an easy fix to keep the biting bugs at bay.

"It could virtually be eliminated almost if people would just dump all their standing water in their yard," he told Smith.
