LIDO BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Some children on Long Island have posted signs reminding people the area beaches are for the birds.
A group of children from Roosevelt, N.Y., designed colorful signs that now line Lido Beach, reading “Protect Nature,” “Caution: Bird Nesting Area,” and “Help Us,” WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported.
Hempstead Town Supervisor said the signs serve as an important reminder to locals to steer clear of sensitive nesting areas.
“They created beautiful posters that will raise awareness amongst our beachgoers about the very special habitats that we have here for endangered species like the Piping Plover, like the Sanderling, all sorts of interesting bird that make the beach their home,” Murray told Hall. “With the help of these young people, we’ll raise awareness amongst our beachgoers not to go into certain areas.”
Students like 10-year old Daileen Nativi said they felt compelled to act.
“When we went to the field trip the last, I saw the cracked eggs and felt really bad for them so that’s why I made the signs to protect their eggs,” she told Hall.
