4 Injured When Fire Truck Jumps Curb In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — At least four people were injured Monday when a fire truck jumped a curb in Brooklyn.
FDNY Engine 211 collided with a minivan near the intersection of Marcy Avenue and Hewes Street in Williamsburg while heading to a fire alarm around 11 a.m., 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported.
“This morning it was like a terribly loud noise,” witness Mary Dunbar told CBS 2’s Jessica Schneider.
Dunbar was a half block away when a fire truck driving to a call slammed into a Dodge Caravan at the intersection.
The Dodge Caravan was turning at the intersection when the two collided.
“He had to be going extremely fast…the van, because it was all dented in,” Dunbar said.
The minivan spun into the curb as the fire truck careened onto the sidewalk, hitting a parked vehicle and a fire hydrant. The knocked over hydrant and broken glass was still littering the sidewalk as of Monday afternoon, Schneider reported.
“It was a pretty hard impact,” said one woman who heard the crash.
Three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
“One had to be put on a stretcher and a neck brace. The other fireman, something with his feet because he was in a wheelchair and his feet were bandaged. And the third fireman, something with his hands,” Dunbar said.
The driver of the minivan was seriously injured, Jones reported. But the man was able to walk away from his car and wait for an ambulance, Schneider reported.
In the aftermath of the crash, some people in the community blamed the fire truck of driving recklessly and without the proper warnings.
“No sirens, no sirens at all,” said one witness.
But a man who works at a nearby grocery disputes that claim.
“I heard the sirens, yeah. I heard the sirens,” witness Rafael Guevara told Schneider. “I heard them before the accident.”
The fire truck was on its way to a call at the time of the collision. The call turned out to be a false alarm, Schneider reported.
The cause the crash is under investigation.
