Police Searching For Man Seen Rappelling From Brooklyn Bridge

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are searching for a daredevil who managed to rappel from the Brooklyn Bridge onto a rooftop below.

Witnesses reported seeing a man trying to climb down some kind of netting that had been installed as part of ongoing construction on the bridge around 9 a.m. Thursday, police said.

When he couldn't make it down on the netting, he grabbed a coiled red hose and used it to descend from the bridge and drop onto a roof of a building, CBS 2's Emily Smith reported.

Witnesses said the man was wearing a bright red t-shirt and dark pants.

"We were thinking dare devil, really because he was able to handle that hose and get down really fast, that's certainly what sprung to mind," one witness said, "Before that we were worried he was on a net that wasn't safe."

A video posted on YouTube Thursday appears to show a man sliding down onto a rooftop from something hanging off the bridge. The man then ran off.

Witnesses said it happened quickly.

"He didn't hang on the rope," one woman told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten. "He just climbed quickly down the rope."

Police deployed helicopters and swept the bridge and roadways, but found no sign of the man. Cops believe he was pulling off some kind of stunt and do not suspect terrorism.

The investigation is ongoing.
