Ice Bar Set To Bring Relief To Heat-Weary New Yorkers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Big Apple might be better termed the Baked Apple this week, with temperatures expected to climb into the 90s for the next three days.

But as 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported, at one spot, a parka and a fur coat, gloves and a hat will be necessary.

"It's a giant freezer, but there's a lot of technology behind it," said President Noel Bowman, president of the Minus 5 Ice Bar.

Inside the Minus5 Ice Bar, President Noel Bauman said the thermostat is kept at a refreshing 23 degrees.

"We transport people into a winter wonderland of 90 tons of ice," he said.

Everything in the venue is made of ice – the walls, the bar, and even the glasses. And if you want to sit and relax, a fur pelt is the only option to keep from sitting on ice.

In the winter, this idea might go over like an ice balloon. But on Friday, with a forecast high in the lower 90s, New Yorkers liked the idea just fine.

"I think it's really cool," said "James," as the sweat poured down his face. "Cool is not a pun, by the way."

The Minus5 Ice Bar opens on Monday at the New York Hilton Midtown, at Sixth Avenue and 53rd Street.
