MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – Extra relief from the heat is being offered to Nassau County residents.
The county’s public pools will be open an additional two hours on Monday – until 8 p.m. – to help residents combat another day with hot and humid conditions.
“We have record-breaking attendance at our pools. Wantagh this weekend had the highest attendance ever, so there’s a great demand for them,” Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano told reporters including WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. “We’re happy that our pools are in good shape, they’re open, they’re there for the comfort of our residents.”
Mangano said the extended hours will help residents stay cool and safe in the extreme heat.
“These heat advisories need to be taken very seriously, especially by those that are elderly,” said Mangano.
Officials recommend staying indoors in the air conditioning, drinking water regularly, putting on sunscreen, wearing loose-fitting clothing and taking a cool shower or bath.
