Newark Man Gets 15 Years For Robbing Couple, Raping Woman

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A Newark man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday, for robbing a couple and then raping a woman two years ago.

Jamal Peoples, 27, was sentenced Monday by Essex County Judge Joseph C. Cassini III, after pleading guilty in March to robbery and aggravated sexual assault.

Around 10 p.m. on May 25, 2011, Peoples walked past the man and woman near the gazebo at Riverbank Park in Newark. He went on his way at first, but came back with a gun and a second man in tow, Essex County prosecutors said.

Peoples and his accomplice robbed the couple of their cell phones, and just the woman of her identification and cash. He then ordered the man to take his shoes and run away, prosecutors said.

The other robber left, but Peoples remained alone with the victim, whom he raped at gunpoint, prosecutors said.

Under the New Jersey No Early Release Act, Peoples must serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. He will also have to register as a sex offender for life once he is released.
