NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Mariah Carey reached out to Superstorm Sandy victims with a concert in Central Park on Saturday night.

The event kicked off at 7:30 p.m. and went on in spite of a dislocated shoulder that the singer suffered while shooting a promo for her new song #Beautiful.

Carey also cracked a rib and chipped a shoulder bone in the accident which was caused by a wardrobe malfunction, husband Nick Cannon told members of the press.

Shortly before Carey was set to perform she tweeted an excited confirmation that she would be taking the stage on Central Park's Great Lawn.

1010 WINS Reporter Gary Baumgarten spoke with organizers who said that the concert was meant to raise awareness about the struggles faced by Sandy victims.

"A concert like this inside Central Park on the great lawn where we say it's for the benefit of Sandy relief it raises the attention bar that may have dissipated," said Major League Baseball Vice President Tim Bronsan.

Major League Baseball raised over a million dollars for Sandy Relief. The league works with the All-Star Game host city every year to organize an event, 2013's All-Star Game is being held at Citi Field.
