Stage Stars Step Up To Help Furry Friends At ‘Broadway Barks’
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) — Dogs had their day on Broadway on Saturday when the stars of the Great White Way stepped up to promote pet adoption as part of ‘Broadway Barks’.
The event is designed to find homes for hundreds of cats and dogs and has been running for 15 years. It was first started by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters who used their star power to recruit other performers.
“No one has a heart as big as the Broadway community, they come together, they understand, they get it. They understand how important it is,” Peters told CBS 2’s Cindy Hsu.
Harvey Fierstein helped Peters with this years event and told CBS 2’s Hsu that pets can be better than people.
“They don’t judge, you can tell them anything and they won’t tell on you,” he said.
The festivities kicked off at noon, and the Humane Society credited the event with helping people find homes for hundreds of pets.
“They all need homes and people come out and meet the dog of their dreams and it’s terrific,” a Human Society spokesperson said.
City shelters regularly look for loving homes for their pets.
