PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The heated incident at Carvel Ice Cream store in Patchogue Friday night had nothing to do with the scorching temperatures.

Patrons at the ice cream shop reportedly got involved when an unarmed man came into the store before 8 p.m. and attempted to steal cash from the register.

As the suspect, 47-year-old Glen Gregor, tried to leave with an unknown amount of money, customers held the store's front door closed from the outside in an effort to contain him, police said.

The suspect allegedly kicked out one of the windows and ran from the shop to make his escape.  A chase ensued and the suspect was arrested.

The man was treated for his injuries at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Patchogue and no one else involved in the incident was injured.

The suspect is expected to be charged Saturday with third-degree robbery, police said.
