Police: Accused Heroin Dealers Stashed Baggies In Daughter's Hello Kitty Backpack

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - A Stamford couple was charged with dealing heroin after finding the drugs in their young daughter's Hello Kitty backpack, police announced.

As WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, police were waiting for Miguel Angel Vazquez, 43, and Justine Martinez Fernandez-Vazquez, 27 outside their home Tuesday.

According to police, the couple had just taken their 4-year-old daughter into Westchester County to purchase 72 glassine envelopes of heroin for resale in Fairfield County.

"Also including in the Hello Kitty bag was a pair of brass knuckles," Stamford Police Captain Richard Conklin told Schneidau.

Police said there's been a recent resurgence in heroin trafficking in Stamford.

Vasquez and Fernandez-Vazquez face a number of charges that could put them behind bars for years, Schneidau reported.

State officials are looking into the welfare of the little girl.
