Derek Jeter Returns To Yankees Lineup, Homers On First Pitch He Sees
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Yankees announced on Sunday morning that captain Derek Jeter will return to their lineup. He was activated before the Yankees' 1:05 p.m. Sunday game against the first-place Tampa Bay Rays.
Jeter is penciled in at second on Joe Girardi's lineup card and is playing the field at shortstop.
He took full advantage of the dramatic day by delivering an opposite field home run on the first pitch he saw from Rays' starter Matt Moore. Jeter later delivered a single in his second at-bat, then grounded out in his third and fourth plate appearances. He was walked in the bottom of the ninth before Alfonso Soriano delivered the walk-off single that earned the Yankees to a 6-5 win.
The Yankees' captain finished 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and a walk.
The star shortstop missed 91 games before playing his first game of the 2013 season on July 11 against the Kansas City at Yankee Stadium. During that game, he suffered another injury that again sent him to the disabled list. Jeter sustained a Grade 1 strained right quadriceps.
On Saturday, Jeter played a simulated game in Staten Island.
To make room for Jeter, the Yankees placed designated hitter Travis Hafner on the disabled list. Hafner has been troubled by a right rotator cuff strain.
