NESCONSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A 14-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was struck by a sport utility vehicle on a Long Island highway.

Natalie Maloney of Ronkonkoma was trying to cross Nesconset Highway at Middle Country Road when she was struck by a 2012 Chevrolet Suburban around 11:40 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Maloney was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where she is listed in critical but guarded condition, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, 64-year-old Domiciano Rubi of Brentwood, and his passenger were not injured, police said.

The vehicle has been impounded for a safety inspection.

The investigation is ongoing.
