Port Monmouth Man Faces Charges In Connection With Cemetery Brass Thefts

HAZLET, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Caretakers at Shoreland Memorial Cemetery in Hazlet were the first ones to notice that something was wrong. It seems that someone had been stealing brass vases off of graves.

"About thirty to fifty graves had the vases, the brass vases that hold flowers taken off the graves," Police Chief James Broderick said.

Investigators started their search at local recycling scrap yards and picked up a description of a vehicle, and it wasn't long before police arrested Port Monmouth resident Daniel Price, 26, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.

"He had just left the cemetery with another sixteen of the vases in the back of his truck," Broderick said.

Police were still trying to tally up the total number of missing vases on Saturday, but Price faces multiple counts of theft.
