Boomer To Jets: If Geno's The Guy, Sanchez Has To Go

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- WFAN co-host Boomer Esiason says the Jets need to sack quarterback Mark Sanchez.

"They should just get rid of Mark Sanchez now," Esiason said Monday on the "Boomer & Carton" show.

Esiason thinks that if it's rookie Geno Smith's time to shine, it should be Sanchez's time to go.

"Now it's time," he said. "Because there's just no way in the world -- you know this whole Jets West thing where Mark tries to do the right thing, brings the players out there (to Southern California)? Does that mean anything? It doesn't mean a damn thing. And who did not go to that?"

Esiason: Cut Mark Sanchez

As we all know by now, Smith opted not to attend Sanchez's annual camp. The two have been locked in a competition for the starting job.

"Last year I said they should have cut Tim Tebow, because it was a fiasco, it was a disaster, it was a distraction," Esiason said. "And I felt this way the moment they drafted Geno Smith, that Mark Sanchez was not long for this."

Smith, the team's second-round pick out of West Virginia, has been impressive at training camp. Sanchez has had his good days too, though you wouldn't know it judging by the boos during Saturday's Green & White scrimmage at SUNY Cortland.

"If in fact they feel comfortable that Geno Smith can handle this, then (Sanchez has) gotta go," Esiason said. "You can't keep him here."

Releasing him would mean massive financial implications for the Jets. But Boomer was worried more about how Sanchez's presence would affect Smith.

"Just from the outside looking in, knowing from being in that situation myself, the last thing that Geno Smith needs is the distraction of having Mark Sanchez around," he said.
