Homicide Investigation Continues After Body Found In Long Island Park

WANTAGH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the death of man whose body was found in a Long Island park.

The body of a young male, likely in his 20s, was discovered by a passerby near Mill Pond Park Preserve in Wantagh around 4 p.m. Sunday, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

As CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff reported Monday, police said there's no doubt it's a homicide.

The male victim was found slumped over a log in a wooded area, police said. Sources told Gusoff it appears the victim was killed execution-style.

"The Nassau County Police Department received a 911 call from a passerby who was walking in Mill Pond here in Wantagh who discovered a body in the woods," Nassau County Police Inspector Kenneth Lack said.

Nassau County refused to comment on reports that the victim was decapitated, Xirinachs reported.

The murder mystery in the park off Merrick Road had walkers and joggers on edge on Monday.

"For all I know, the person could've been walking the path. If you take a look, you'll see that it's quite desolate back there," said one local.

"I don't know what goes on here at night but during the day I never see anything going on here," another park goer told Gusoff.

Others said the preserve has its share of homeless and drug dealers after dark.

"If you're a young lady like your age, stay the heck away at night," said a local.

Police were still on the scene 24 hours after the body was found. They said they'll use fingerprint comparison to try to identify the victim.

"Homicide is at scene, along with our crime scene investigators and we ask anybody with information regarding this incident to please call our Crime Stoppers number at 1-800-244-TIPS," Lack said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to the Nassau County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
