Judge: 143-Foot Office Building Can Be Built On The Palisades

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Opponents plan to appeal a judge's ruling in favor of constructing a new office tower in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., in what some argue would ruin the pristine view of the Palisades.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, LG Electronics plans to build a 143 foot tall office building, and at that height, the building would rise above the tree line.

A judge on Friday sided with Englewood Cliffs in allowing the project. But opponents have remained opposed and said they plan to appeal.

"All these buildings will stick out like a sore thumb and just tower above the treeline," said Hayley Carlock – an attorney with Scenic Hudson, one of the groups bringing the issue to court.

Carlock said LG Electronics simply does not have to build a tower so tall. Buildings in the area are normally limited to 35 feet, but the borough of Englewood Cliffs granted a variance and then changed the zoning to allow the LG complex.

"They have the space on the site - more than ample space to build something below the treeline, have the same square footage of the exact same site," Carlock said.

Leading the charge against the construction has been Larry Rockefeller. His grandfather, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., purchased the cliff tops to preserve them as open space.

LG said it has been transparent and accountable in achieving all approvals.
