Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer's Sunnyside Home Burglarized

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Queens councilman's house was broken into over the weekend, police said.

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer was on vacation at the time of Saturday's burglary.

Police said a neighbor noticed that the front door of the Sunnyside home had been pried open and called police.

Van Bramer said that a bike, cash and his mother's jewelry was stolen.

"That's probably the thing that most upsets me because it was my mother's and she actually asked me to hold onto it and safeguard it for her," Van Bramer told 1010 WINS.

Police also said that items from cabinets and closets were dumped on the floor.

"The house was pretty trashed," Van Bramer said. "The framing on the front door was ripped off."

Van Bramer's district covers Long Island City and Astoria.

"We've had break-ins before in Sunnyside Gardens and they have happened at the same time overnight and I think that's what's most disturbing about this, the fact that we have pretty aggressive home thieves who are breaking into homes when they absolutely know that people are sleeping," Van Bramer said.
