Seal Attracts Crowds At Perth Amboy Waterfront

PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A seal has been putting on a show in Perth Amboy.

An adult harbor seal beached itself Thursday, attracting the attention of beachgoers who gathered around to get a closer look at the creature and snap pictures.

"It's not a usual sighting at all," one onlooker said. "To see an actual creature on the shore, it's pretty big."

"I've never seen a seal in person so it's pretty extravagant," another onlooker said.

"I just could not believe that it was on the Perth Amboy waterfront," another onlooker said. "It was just amazing to see that and be that close to the seal. It's unbelievable, it's insane."

The seal could be seen sunbathing on the beach and taking dips in Raritan Bay, 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg reported.

"It looks like it's just chilling in the sun, not doing anything, just enjoying life," one man said.

"It's basically laying on its tummy, just chilling there, I guess it's enjoying the attention," one woman said.

Volunteers from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center responded to the scene and said the seal appears to be a healthy adult and is not in any danger.

It is believed the seal is the same mammal spotted in Seawaren along Arthur Kill on Wednesday, 1010 WINS' reported.
