NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Cops used a blood trail to track down a suspected rapist at a local hospital on Wednesday.

The woman woke up to find the suspect holding her down with a knife to her throat. The victim's father overheard the commotion and sprang into action, 1010 WINS reported.

The suspect struggled with the father and then jumped through a closed living room window. The escape attempt left him with lacerations all over his body.

Police followed a blood trail to Elmhurst Hospital where they arrested Andres Santana and charged him with Rape, a Criminal Sex Act, and Burglary.

Neighbors told 1010 WINS that the suspect used to live in the same neighborhood as the victim. A source indicated that the victim and the suspect may have had a relationship in the past.

"I'm really shocked, I mean I know he's a kid that got into trouble in the past, but nothing to this extent," said Lorna.
