Fair Lawn Police: Driver, Passenger Arrested For DWI After Men Switch Places

FAIR LAWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Police in Fair Lawn, N.J. arrested two men in the same car for allegedly driving drunk.

According to police, a car crashed through a fence at Route 208 and Morlot Avenue in Fair Lawn around 3 a.m. on Sunday, August 11.

An officer found the men - Lazaro Perez, 35, and Franklyn Bardecker, 23 - about a block away in the car.

"He questioned the driver," Fair Lawn Police Det. Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

The officer determined the man behind the wheel was actually the passenger at the time of the crash.

"And they had switched because the original passenger thought that the original driver was too drunk to drive," Metzler said. "Roadside sobriety tests were given to both and they were both arrested."

As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, apparently friends don't let friends drive drunk, even when they're drunk themselves.

"Well fortunately, they weren't hurt," Metzler said.

The two Edison men have been charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Bardecker - the one behind the wheel during the crash - was also charged with reckless driving, police said.

"It's funny to you and me, but it may not be funny to them," said Metzler of the dual DWI arrests.
