Nicholas Brooks To Be Sentenced In Murder Of Fashion Designer Sylvie Cachay

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The man convicted in the murder of a New York City fashion designer who was found dead at an upscale Manhattan hotel is expected to be sentenced Monday.

Nicholas Brooks faces up to 25 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Sylvie Cachay. The 33-year-old swimsuit designer was found dead in an overflowing bathtub in the swanky SoHo House hotel in December 2010.

The medical examiner ruled Cachay died of strangulation and drowning.

Prosecutors said Brooks strangled Cachay when she tried to end their relationship.

The defense argued that Cachay had taken sleeping pills and other prescription medications that could have caused her to black out and fall into the tub and that the injuries caused to the front and back of her neck could have been caused during the efforts to revive her.

But that argument was sharply refuted by the medical examiner, who said the drugs played no role in her death.
