Church Of Scientology Building Huge Facility In Harlem

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Church of Scientology is coming to Harlem.

The church is building a multi-million dollar chapel and community center on East 125th Street between Second and Third Avenues.

It is slated to open next year.

Although Scientology has been blasted by some as being more like a cult than a religion, many Harlem residents are welcoming the church into the neighborhood with open arms.

"Everything has been cleaned up pretty nicely," one woman said. "I think it'll be nice to have a brand new building that's in good condition."

"I think it's a good idea because it's going to bring more people to this area and maybe attract more businesses too," another woman said.

The church spent nearly $10 million to acquire the land and construction will cost many millions more, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.
