Sources: K9 Dog Tracks Down Suspect Who Allegedly Knocked Down Cop

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NYPD K9 dog was credited Wednesday with finding a suspect who allegedly jumped a subway turnstile and threw an officer to the ground.

Police sources told WCBS 880's Alex Silverman the man tried to skip out on paying at the 16th Street and Eighth Avenue entrance to the 14th Street A, C and E train stop. A female transit officer chased the suspect up to the street, where there was a scuffle, sources said.

The suspect threw the officer to the ground and got away, but left a gray shirt and baseball cap behind, sources said.

Within five minutes a, transit K9 dog -- a German shepherd named Diesel -- came to the scene and sniffed the clothes. Diesel picked up the scent heading west on 16th Street.

A retired police officer from Connecticut named Scott said he saw the suspect running down the street shirtless.

"He looked out of place," Scott said. "Even in Manhattan, he looked out of place."

Diesel joined NYPD officers in chasing him down, police sources said.

Retired officer Scott directed police to the entrance to the Dream Hotel -- one of Lindsay Lohan's haunts -- which is partially under construction, and the suspect was located and arrested, police sources said.

The suspect was covered in white construction dust when he was led out, police sources said.

The transit officer the suspect allegedly threw to the ground suffered minor arm injuries, and stayed at the scene to identify her attacker, police said.

No charges against the suspect had been announced Wednesday night.
