Report: Sanchez Unlikely To Be Ready For Season Opener; Is Geno Up?
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- We still don't know who will start at quarterback for the Jets when they open the season against the Buccaneers on September 8, and we might not know until right before the game.
The competition throughout training camp and preseason has been between Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith, with Greg McElroy and Matt Simms fighting for the third-string job.
The decision hasn't been easy for Jets head coach Rex Ryan, although he might not end up having much of a choice in the matter when it comes time to make a final decision.
According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Sanchez is unlikely to be ready for the season opener.
The four-year starter and former first-round pick injured his shoulder in the fourth quarter last week against the Giants. He's still listed as day to day by the Jets, but the team is worried that he might miss more than just one game, according to NFL.com.
So which quarterback will take his place if Sanchez is unable to go?
According to Rapoport, it's very likely that Smith, the team's second-round pick at this year's NFL Draft, will get the call on September 8.
Smith started against the Giants and struggled, completing 16 of 30 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown. He also threw three interceptions and was sacked.
Neither Smith nor Sanchez played on Thursday night in the Jets' final preseason game against the Eagles. Simms played every snap under center and impressed en route to Gang Green's 27-20 victory.
