Search Continues For Mother Who Left Baby In Trash In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Jersey City continued Sunday to search for the mother of a baby boy who was found abandoned in a trash bag.

The baby was found Saturday afternoon by children playing near an apartment building on Kensington Avenue in Jersey City. They were drawn to a moving trash bag, thinking the baby was a kitten.

The children knocked on the building superintendent's door, and he and his wife ran outside and tore the bag open, 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported Saturday.

"I saw that there was a baby in there and I ripped the bag more where his face was and the baby had garbage all over it," said Rebecca Walmers.

The baby was breathing and the good Samaritans called 911. First responders took the baby to the hospital with the umbilical cord still attached.

Investigators said the infant was born prematurely and weighs between 2 and 3 pounds.

He was in stable condition as of Sunday.
