NEW YORK (WFAN) – Wide receiver Victor Cruz says the New York Giants lost their opener to the Cowboys in Dallas mainly because they couldn’t hold on to the football.
No surprise there.
Six turnovers – a brutal combination of fumbles, interceptions and a muffed punt – would doom just about any team.
“I think the biggest key was just turnovers,” Cruz said Tuesday on WFAN’s “Boomer & Carton” show. “I mean, there’s no way we’re going to win a game with six turnovers.”
Most of the focus has been on second-year running back David Wilson, who was benched in the second half after two fumbles, one of which was returned for a touchdown.
Cruz knows what Wilson is going through. The receiver was criticized plenty after dropping three passes in last year’s Week 1 loss to the Cowboys.
“We don’t want to mentally get down,” Cruz said. “I just want to talk to (Wilson) and keep his spirits high, and understand that we’re behind him. We’re going to need him to make plays. He’s a dynamic running back, and we’re going to need him to make plays in order for us to win ball games.
“We’ve just gotta keep his emotions high, keep his mentality positive, and we can go from there. … It’s definitely a tough time for him and he’s gotta get through it.”
Cruz said he was proud of the Giants for being in a position to complete the comeback late in the fourth quarter despite the turnovers. The Cowboys won 36-31.
“I’m proud of my team,” Cruz said. “I wouldn’t want to be on any other team right now, man. And I think our resiliency and our battle in that second half really showed what type of team we are. And if we can be able to nip those turnovers in the bud early on, we’ll be able to be very successful this season.”
