NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner was the first to concede in the Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night, but the scene was less than pretty.
Weiner came in with only 5 percent of the vote Tuesday – behind frontrunner Bill de Blasio, runner-up Bill Thompson, Christine Quinn, and John Liu. Upon conceding defeat, he went to Connolly’s Pub and Restaurant, at 121 W. 45th St., to address his supporters.
“We did not win this time. But I could not be more proud of the campaign that we ran,” Weiner told the crowd. “We never backed down. We never ducked.”
But a certain uninvited guest showed up at the Weiner event. Sydney Leathers – the woman whose sexting revelations led to his collapse in the polls – had some less-than-kind words about Weiner as she stood outside the door at Connolly’s.
“He needs to just stop being an embarrassment to the city of New York,” Leathers told reporters outside the bar. “He should have dropped out of the race a long time ago, in my opinion.”
Earlier, Leathers had come to Weiner’s Midtown campaign headquarters and urged people not to vote for him, the newspaper reported. The newspaper photographed Leathers holding a stenciled sign reading, “Don’t vote Weiner. Download ‘Weinerizer,’” referring to a parody of Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” that Leathers has recorded.
Leathers hoped to come face-to-face with Weiner and confront him at Connolly’s, but that never happened. She was denied access to the event, and Weiner entered Connolly’s through another door, according to a New York Daily News report.
But the drama did not end there. Upon leaving Connolly’s, multiple published reports and images appeared to show Weiner raising his middle finger as reporters watched him drive off.
After Weiner first announced his candidacy, he found himself in the lead in many polls among the Democratic candidates for mayor. But his numbers took a nosedive after revelations surfaced in July about his sexting relationship with Leathers.
The gossip Web site “The Dirty” published several steamy exchanges and two censored photos reportedly supplied by Leathers, who the site said had been involved in an online relationship with Weiner as late as the summer of 2012. Weiner became instantly infamous for the “Carlos Danger” screen name that appeared with the seamy messages.
When the allegations hit, Weiner responded apologetically at a news conference alongside his wife, Huma Abedin. But he said he would be moving forward with his mayoral campaign, despite calls from some of his opponents – as well as newspaper editorial writers – to withdraw.
The scandal grew seamier in the days afterward. Two days after the initial revelations, The Dirty posted two unredacted photos of a man’s penis that it said Weiner sent to Leathers last year.
Abedin was not seen with her husband on Tuesday, according to published reports.
As for Leathers, she has capitalized on her notoriety not only with the parody song, but also with an adult film titled “Weiner and Me” that was released late last month.
