Thompson Hits Ground Running With Plan To Reform Brooklyn DA's Office

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Ken Thompson already has big ideas on how he can leave his mark on the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.

Thompson, who defeated longtime incumbent Charles "Joe" Hynes in Tuesday's primary, told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa on Wednesday he wants to create a labor unit that will investigate employers who steal workers' wages.

"We have many honest employees in Brooklyn, but there are some unscrupulous employees who steal their employees' wages or subject them to dangerous working conditions," Thompson said.

He said he also wants to put together a cyber unit to crack down on identity theft, and believes there is a role the office can play in the implementation of the NYPD's controversial stop-and-frisk program.

"We help train the police better to identify what constitutes reasonable suspicion," said Thompson, who made a name for himself as the attorney for Nafissatou Diallo, the maid in the sensational Dominique Strauss-Kahn sexual assault case.

Thompson said it's about clarifying when to stop and to frisk if a person is believed to be armed and dangerous.

Thompson said he would also like to see a more proactive federal role in getting guns off the streets.

"Gun violence is literally killing our children on the streets of Brooklyn," Thompson said. "So we have to come together and work more closely with the federal government."

He said he would call on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to step up its patrols of gun trafficking.

The DA-elect will soon move into office space with incumbent Hynes to insure a smooth transition.
