Police: Livery Cab Driver Wanted For Rape In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD is searching for a livery cab driver who police say is wanted for raping a woman in Brooklyn.

Police said the 35-year-old woman hailed a SUV livery cab around 5 a.m. on Sept. 17 in Brownsville. Once inside the car, she was raped by the driver, police said.

She was eventually able to get out of the cab on East 95th Street and Avenue B, police said.

Police released a surveillance image of the suspect, who authorities described as a black man, 20 to 25-years-old, about six-feet-two inches tall and weighing between 175 and 210 pounds.

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers said it is offering a $2,000 reward for information in the case, but Fernando Mateo, spokesman for the NYSFTD, said it's unclear if the suspect was actually a legally operating livery cab driver.

"The are over 10,000 drivers operating illegally in all 5 boroughs without anyone cracking down on them," he said in a statement. "It is unfair to the 60,000 drivers who are working legally and that are law-abiding to take such a hit. We get a black eye when accusations like this happen."

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visit CrimeStoppers.com or by text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
