Remember Me Thursday Shines Light On Shelter Pets

New York (CBSNewYork) The Humane Society of the United States estimates that each year, more than 3.4 million animals lose their lives in shelters across the country, without ever finding a loving home.

On Thursday, September 26th, animal advocates participated in "Remember Me Thursday", a global candle lighting event honoring those animals and shining a light on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption.

"Remember Me Thursday" is the brainchild of Michael M. Arms of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe California.   In New York, it was held at Bidewee, a private no-kill shelter on Manhattan's east side that is a member of the Mayor's Alliance For NYC's Animals. As an alliance participating organization, Bideawee is among 150 rescue groups that work with Animal Care & Control of New York's New Hope Program, to save animals at risk of being euthanized.

Among those in attendance, Vito Vincent, a Bideawee alum whose gone on to become a successful feline actor, appearing on television, in print ads and in the Broadway show "Breakfast At Tiffanys".

1010 WINS Anchor Susan Richard was there, and has more in the latest edition of All For Animals:
