NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Earlier this week, coming off the Giants’ blowout loss to the Chiefs which put them at 0-4 on the season, captain Justin Tuck called out his teammates.
The two-time Pro Bowler flat-out said that if any Giants turn on head coach Tom Coughlin, they’ll be sorry.
“If anyone turns on our coach, I would be the first one to punch him in the mouth,” the defensive end told the New York Daily News. “And put that in print. It better not happen, I know that.”
The comment came after wide receiver Victor Cruz admitted that he was upset when Coughlin opted not to go for it on a fourth down late in the third quarter against the Chiefs.
On Wednesday night, Ravens defensive end Chris Canty — who played with the Giants from 2009-2012 before being released on February 6 — responded to what Tuck said, and he wasn’t exactly complimentary.
Canty believes that Tuck needs to worry more about dealing with opposing players, as opposed to his own teammates.
“First and foremost, let’s address Justin Tuck’s comment,’’ Canty said on the NFL Network’s “Around The League Live.” “He said he’d punch anybody in the mouth that had anything to say about Tom Coughlin in that locker room. Justin needs to worry about punching opposing offenses in the mouth.
“The way you show that you have your coach’s back is by going out there on that football field and performing.’’
The Giants will be looking for their first victory of the season when they host the division-rival Eagles on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Despite being 0-4 and in last place in the NFC East, the G-Men are only two games behind the first-place Cowboys (2-2). Both the Eagles and the Redskins are 1-3.
“I’m sure Tuck is defending his coach,’’ Canty said. “Tom Coughlin is an excellent coach. He’s a great man, so obviously as a player, you want to have his back. But you’ve got to show that on the field. That’s got to be taken care of on the field.”
