WARWICK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — It’s peak time to go apple picking. But do you know which variety of apple is ideal for baking pies, making sauce or simply eating as is?
CBS 2’s Cindy Hsu visited Masker Orchards in Warwick, which has more than 200,000 trees and 14 different kinds of apples.
“I love to eat all the apples,” said Jacquelyn Ludmerer, 9. “They’re just so good. My favorites are the prime reds and golden delciouses.”
Orchard co-owner Victor Ludmerer said when it comes to apple pie, go for the harder apples.
“In my opinion, the Granny Smith green, which is a wonderful baking apple,” he said. “It stays together. It doesn’t fall apart. Wonderful for pies.”
He also said he loves Cortland apples for pies.
If you’re making apple sauce, go for the McIntosh. And while red delicious apples may look good, the experts at Masker told Hsu the tasiest apples are the Jonagold and Empire.
“The trick is to get up early and get here before they all get taken,” Jacquelyn Ludmerer recommended.
