Retired Urologist Calls On Men To Get Tested For Prostate Cancer

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- A Connecticut urologist has retired from the practice, but not from his effort to help protect men from prostate cancer.

As WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau reported, Dr. Jeffrey Rebuffo was a practicing urologist for 40 years. And he expressed frustration that more men do not avail themselves for testing for prostate cancer.

A prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is available and reliable, he said. And Rebuffo said the reason for the test is an urgent one.

"When I was in practice before the PSA became available, the way we would discover prostate cancer was when it was in its metastatic form – you know, when it had spread – because it is basically a disease that has no symptoms in its early stage," Rebuffo said.

If testing is positive, successful treatment can be administered early on.

Rebuffo is now working on getting the State of Connecticut to sign for an auto license plate design to help promote awareness and early testing.
