Police: Officer Shoots Knife-Wielding Man In Deer Park

DEER PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police say they shot a mentally ill Deer Park man who was threatening to behead his father.

The father of Eric Bohlsen called police around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday saying his 40-year-old son was not taking his medication and was threatening him, said Suffolk County Police Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.

"When police arrived, they encountered a 40-year-old male outside the apartment armed with a knife," Fitzpatrick said. "A foot pursuit ensued through the apartment complex, ending up back within the apartment itself, where the 40-year-old male was shot once in the chest by police."

Bohlsen lunged at an officer, police said. Cops first used a stun gun before opening fire, authorities said. Bohlsen was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was in stable condition Wednesday night.

Police were at the complex, at 9 Parkcenter Dr., for hours investigating.

Bohlsen was arrested on two outstanding warrants, and additional charges are pending, police said.

One neighbor told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall that she couldn't believe the man was causing any trouble.

"He is a good kid," she said. "He never bothers anybody. He just says hello. ... He's mentally handicapped. He doesn't know how to be bad."
