Mobile Couch: Halloween Costumes At Screaming Mimi's

NEW YORK (WLNY) -- This Halloween you can own a piece of history all while rocking an original look. A vintage store is selling one-of-a-kind costumes from the New York City Opera.

CBS 2's Alex Denis recently got the chance to check out some of the outfits.

The pressure is on to top last year's costume.

Looking for a 1950s getup? Maybe a vintage kimono?

Rest assured you'll find everything at Screaming Mimi's in NoHo.

The staff spends an entire year searching for the perfect vintage pieces so you don't have to.

This year, their hunt paid off as a warehouse was filled with original costumes from the New York City Opera, which recently closed its doors.

"It was packed. It was definitely a challenge. And, we weren't even sure what we were getting. We'd see a little sliver of sleeve and pray that what was on the end of it was something fantastic," said Laura Mills, owner of Screaming Mimi's.

The costumes represent dozens of shows and feature head-to-toe dazzling detailing, including a piece of New York City history stitched to the sleeve – labels that indicate the show and performer's name.

The entire vintage look can cost several hundred dollars.

You don't have to commit to the entire costume. You can buy individual pieces like a bracelet for $28 or crown for $38, Denis reported.

The store's stylists promise you'll leave in a Halloween look that's perfect for you.

"Find just one little piece that you love and we'll help you style a look that not only makes you look good but feel good," stylist David Eidkus said.

Then you can wear you're one-of-a-kind costume proudly.

An entire transformation can cost you $300, or you can spice up your look with individual pieces for less than $40, Denis reported.
