Hartford Archdiocese To Make Major Announcement Tuesday

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford will make a major announcement about its future Tuesday.

The archdiocese hasn't said what the scheduled news conference concerns. A message was left seeking comment Monday night.

After the election of Pope Francis last spring, Archbishop Henry Mansell said in an interview with WFSB-TV he had told the previous pope that he was willing to retire after turning 75 in October 2012.

Mansell said in the interview he was told his tenure would be reviewed by the new pope.

Mansell has been Hartford's archbishop since December 2003. He told WFSB he's been very happy in the job, and even after a successor is appointed he would remain in the archdiocese to help.

In September, Mansell conducted the installation ceremony for new Bridgeport Bishop Frank Caggiano.
