Little Boy Severs Finger On Elliptical Machine At Long Island Park

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A child severely injured his finger on a piece of exercise equipment in a Long Island Park recently.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, the fitness machines at Elwood Park in Huntington, Long Island, were supposed to provide an easy means for adults to work out and live healthier.

But authorities said a little boy of an unspecified age severed his finger on an elliptical machine at the park on Oct. 22.

A Good Samaritan helped the child after the accident.

"Well you know what it is, there's one screw holding it on and it rotates around when you do the elliptical and it came around and sliced the finger right off, and it was pretty much hanging from just the bottom thread," said Good Samaritan John Dunne. "And we just held it together till the ambulance came."

The machine is part of an outdoor fitness area for adults. The elliptical machine has been covered up, and will be hauled off.

Although a sign has been mounted saying the fitness area is only for those 13 and older, the town will now take it a step further and put up a fence around the area with a latch for adults to get inside and out.

Two other parks in the town also have outdoor fitness equipment.
