Report: MLBPA Investigating Jay Z For Giving $33,900 Watch To Cano

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Robinson Cano is the premier free agent on the market, and he could be looking at a payday of $200 million in the coming weeks or months.

But his agent, Jay Z, may have made a major mistake with contract negotiations set to gain steam.

According to ESPN, the rapper-turned-agent recently gave the superstar second baseman a gift. No, it wasn't a DVD player or a bottle of wine. The founder of Roc Nation Sports reportedly gave Cano a $33,900 watch.

The five-time All-Star posted a picture of the watch on his Instagram account two weeks ago. He also posted the following comment: "thanks to the ROC NATION my birthday gift."

ESPN has reported that the Major League Baseball Players Association is investigating the matter, as it could violate the agent-client relationship.

Below is the rule which Jay Z may have violated:

Section 5(B)(5)(a): "No Player Agent or Applicant shall provide, cause to be provided or promise to provide, any money or any other thing of value to any player, or any person related to or associated with such player, the purpose of which is to induce or encourage such player to use or continue to use any person's or firm's services as a Player Agent, Representative, or Draft Advisor.''

If Jay Z is found guilty of violating Section 5(B)(5)(a), he will face "unspecified discipline," according to ESPN.

Cano has played for the Yankees since 2005, and the Bronx Bombers are the frontrunners to sign him to a megadeal.

The 31-year-old was his usual excellent self in 2013, batting .314 with 27 homers and 107 RBIs and posting a .383 on-base percentage.
