House Explodes In Cape May, N.J.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A huge fire engulfed a house in southern New Jersey following an explosion Thursday afternoon.

Initial reports said at least two people were injured following the 4 p.m. blast in Cape May County.

Video from the scene shows there is little left of the home located on Atlantic Avenue.

The mayor of a town in Cape May County said neighbors worked to free a couple trapped in the debris of a house that exploded.

Lower Township Mayor Michael Beck, who lives nearby, says it sounded louder than thunder.

The blast leveled the house and sent debris flying onto neighboring properties and into the street.

Beck said neighbors deserve "kudos" for teaming up to pull the couple out of the debris.

Their identities and conditions are not known.

Township Manager Michael Voll said new gas lines were just installed in the neighborhood.
