Glam Team Treats 15 Military Women To Free Makeovers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) --Some women who spend their days serving our country are getting a glam makeover just in time for Veterans Day.

Coast Guard law enforcement officer Rachael Lynn acts tough day in and day out, but as she prepared for her  makeover she couldn't stop giggling, CBS 2's Amy Dardashtian reported.

"I don't even have female friends, I work with all men and I have four brothers," Lynn said. "My hair is pulled back in a bun everyday, no makeup to be one of the guys, I don't want to do that anymore."

Lynn is getting served by a glam team at the L'Oreal Redken Salon which is offering cuts, colors and new styles for 15 servicewomen from New Jersey's Fort Dix military base.

For most it's their first time in a fancy Fifth Avenue salon.

"It feels amazing I've never had anything like this done before, so I'm just ready to relax and party," said Leonette Roe, who is not used to being pampered. "I feel like me."

The makeovers are not only a treat for the servicewomen, but also the stylists, who said it's their opportunity to give back.

"There's that saying, 'If you can't be of service, be of service to somebody who is,'" said stylist Deborah Novick, who called it the most meaningful day of the year. "A lot of these women haven't had their hair professionally done for a long time, so it's just so rewarding to be able to give that to them."

The free beauty services would normally cost about $400 per person.
