Mickey Mantle's Family Donates $40,000 To Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Mickey Mantle's family has donated $40,000 to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

The money was raised by an online auction of the baseball Hall of Famer's 1960 contract with the New York Yankees.

New Jersey first lady Mary Pat Christie, who leads the fund, says the Mantle family called New Jersey home for 18 years while Mantle played for the Yankees.

Mantle's son, Dan, says the donation is a way for the family to provide direct assistance to former neighbors and the victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Mantle died in 1995.

The New Jersey Relief Fund has awarded more than $25 million to 93 nonprofit organizations active in New Jersey's rebuilding and recovery efforts.

The one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy was on October 29.
