Future Captain Of Publishing Industry? Derek Jeter Announces Book Endeavor

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Can Derek Jeter hit a home run as a book publisher?

The Yankees' superstar shortstop is forming his own imprint, Jeter Publishing, in partnership with Simon & Schuster. The imprint will feature a wide range of sports-themed and pop culture books, from picture stories to nonfiction releases for adults.

Simon & Schuster announced the imprint Thursday, and said Jeter will draw upon his many friendships in the sports world and use the "trust factor" to attract authors.

Jeter, who turns 40 next year, is one of the top brand names from the sports world, an almost certain Hall of Famer untouched by scandal.

"This publishing partnership with Simon & Schuster is an exciting way for me to discover and develop new books, sharing insights of my own, or from people I believe have interesting stories, philosophies or practices to share," Jeter said in a Simon & Schuster news release.

"Derek is a stellar role model for kids, and his many stories of the game will inspire young readers," said Jon Anderson, president of Simon & Schuster's children's publishing division.

Simon & Schuster is owned by the CBS Corp.
