Officials: Holiday Season Means Rise In Charity Scams

MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Charity scams are very popular this time of year, and authorities have issued a warning for the good-hearted.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported Saturday, con artists have been trying to steal money and personal information from innocent people as they pretend to be collecting money for charity.

The Nassau County Executive's office advised those who give to charity never to give out their credit or debit card information unless they know the charity is legitimate.

They are also advised to be careful with charities using police, firefighters' or veterans' groups in their names, as many times, they have no connection to legitimate organizations.

Anyone dealing with a purported charity is also advised not to fall victim to high-pressure sales tactics or emotional pleas to get you to donate.

Real charities are always registered with New York State, the Executive's office said.

To check if a charity is real, you can call (212) 416-8401.
