NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Four New York City correction officers and several inmates have been injured during a brawl at Rikers Island Friday night.
A Correction Department spokesman says the fracas at the George Vierno Center started late Friday. It was not immediately clear how the fight started.
Four correction officers were treated for exposure to an unknown chemical agent.
Several inmates also suffered minor injuries.
The spokesman said officers responded within minutes. The incident was under investigation Saturday afternoon.
Rikers Island predominantly holds inmates awaiting trial or serving sentences of less than a year. It currently holds approximately 12,000 inmates.
