NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Saturday were seeking the assailant who shot and killed a man in Washington Heights.

Around 10:35 p.m. Friday, officers were dispatched to 535 W. 156th St., between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, for a call of a man shot.

They found Gregory Tate, 49, lying unconscious in front of the building at the 156th Street address with a gunshot wound to the torso.

Tate was rushed to nearby NewYork Presbyterian-Columbia University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A neighbor told DNAInfo she was not surprised by the incident, and referred to the stretch of 156th Street where the shooting happened as "the killing block."
