The New Jersey Devils won their second straight game, a 1-0 overtime victory over the Sabres Saturday night, and are now 11-7-2 with 24pts over their last 20 games after going winless in their first seven games of the season.

Saturday night's victory marked the 14th time in Devils' history that the team has gone into overtime tied 0-0. New Jersey has won seven of the games that were scoreless after regulation (5 OT, 2 SO), lost five (4 OT, 1 SO), and tied twice.

Here are the five 1-0 Devils regular season overtime wins in club history and the player who scored the sudden-death goal:

·       11/30/13  1-0  vs. Buffalo (Steve Bernier)

·       10/13/10  1-0  at  Buffalo (Ilya Kovalchuk)

·       12/23/07  1-0  at  Calgary (Patrik Elias)

·       12/10/03  1-0  vs. NY Islanders (Patrik Elias)

·       12/2/02    1-0  at  Philadelphia (Brian Gionta)

Cory Schneider made 15 saves to record his second shutout of the season and the 11th of his NHL career in the Devils' 1-0 win over the Sabres.

The shutout was the 6th by a New Jersey goaltender against Buffalo in club history. Martin Brodeur has three, including a 0-0 tie against Dominic Hasek on December 23rd, 1996, his only home-ice shutout vs. the Sabres. Chris Terreri won a 4-0 decision vs. Buffalo at the Meadowlands on November 17th, 1993 and Craig Billington posted a 3-0 victory in New Jersey back on December 28th, 1991.

Schneider has two shutouts in 12 starts for the Devils this season, after posting five in 30 starts for the Canucks last season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Schneider's average of one shutout every six starts over the last two seasons (seven shutouts in 42 starts) is the best rate for any NHL goaltender that has made at least 30 starts since the beginning of the lockout shortened 2012-13 season. The Blues' Jaroslav Halak is second with an average of one shutout every 6.8 starts (five shutouts in 34 starts).

New Jersey scored a season-high four goals in the third period in their 5-2 victory over the Hurricanes Friday night at Carolina. The Devils had not scored more than 2 goals in any period this season.

The Devils record for most goals in a period in six, set five times:

·       4/6/96:     2P of 6-3 win @ Hfd (Andreychuk 2, MacLean, Carpenter, Holik, Daneyko).

·       3/7/93:     3P of 7-3 win vs. Phi (Barr, Richer, Semak, Niedermayer, Guerin, Pellerin).

·       10/23/90: 2P of 8-1 win @ NYI (Maley, Stastny, Lemieux, Crowder, Morris, Ciger).

·       3/10/90:   2P of 9-3 win vs. Que (Stastny 2, Kasatonov, Shanahan, Sundstrom, MacLean).

·       1/7/84:     3P of 7-4 win @ Pit (MacMillan 3, Broten, Verbeek, Cirella).

The Devils outscored the Hurricanes, 4-0, in the third period, erasing a 2-1 deficit and going on to the 5-2 win. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was only the second time in the last 16 seasons that New Jersey won a game by a three-goal or bigger margin after trailing entering the third period.

The Devils' other such win since 1997 was a 6-3 home-ice victory against the Lightning on January 9th, 2011 when New Jersey scored five goals in the 3rd period to turn a 2-1 Tampa Bay lead after 40 minutes into a win.

Before Friday's come-from-behind victory, the last time New Jersey had a comeback win of that kind in a road game was at Pittsburgh back on January 7th, 1984 when the Devils scored six times in the 3rd period to rally from a 3-1 deficit to win, 7-4.

Eric Gelinas recorded a power play assist in the 5-2 win at Carolina and now has 10 points (2 goals, 8 assists) in his 17 games played. Since the 2004-05 NHL lockout, only four other Devils defensemen have recorded 10-or-more points in one full season as a rookie.

·       Johnny Oduya 2006-07  2g-9a  11pts

·       Andy Greene  2007-08   2g-8a  10pts

·       Mark Fayne    2010-11   4g-10a 14pts

·       Adam Larsson 2011-12  2g-16a  18pts

Here are the Devils all-time best single-season point totals by rookie defensemen:

·       Viacheslav Fetisov  1989-90     8g-34a  42pts

·       Scott Niedermayer   1992-93  11g-29a  40pts

·       Eric Weinrich           1990-91    4g-34a  38pts

·       Bruce Driver            1984-85    9g-23a  32pts

·       Brian Rafalski         1999-00     5g-27a  32pts

Schwei's Plus/Minus:

Plus: Steve Bernier. Scores 1st career overtime winner and second goal of the season to give Devils 1-0 win vs. Buffalo.

Minus: Stephen Gionta and Ryan Carter. Bernier's usual linemates both go down with injuries; Gionta (ankle) and Carter (hurt in fight.)
